What if I am not sure if my problem is a Physical /Occupational Therapy problem? What if I am not sure if Therapy will help or not?If you are unsure if your problem would benefit from Physical Therapy the best solution is to schedule one of our Virtual consultations. During this consultation we can dive into what is going on with you and what caused it. From there we can determine if it is a problem best handled with Physical Therapy or not. If it is not, we can also direct you towards the best person/profession to address your issue. This will save you valuable time and effort as well as give you peace of mind.
-
Can I benefit from Physical /Occupational Therapy even if I am not injured?Absolutely. Many of our patients come in strictly for wellness, maintenance or recovery services. This helps them to stay healthy, stay active and to reduce the risk of getting injured. These programs usually require less frequent visits but, they should be made at semi-regular intervals.
-
If I don't know what is wrong, will the Physical Therapist be able to figure out my injury / problem? In most cases, yes. Our very skilled licensed evaluators and given their comprehensive knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics they can usually tell you exactly what tissues are damaged, what is leading to your pain as well as how to correct it. In cases where you do need further testing, we have an extensive network of other medical professionals so we can send you to other top practitioners to get exactly what you need without wasting time.
-
Do I need a referral from my doctor to come see you?You do not! In the state of Florida you can see a physical therapist for up to 30 days without a prescription. This is called direct access. This allows you to skip a step in the process and speed up your recovery by getting treated sooner.
-
If my doctor referred me somewhere else does that mean I can't come to you?Not at all. Your doctor may refer you somewhere based on what he thinks is closest to you or a place they are affiliated with. However, your referral for Physical Therapy is an open referral to go wherever you desire.
-
Does insurance cover my treatment?Yes, in most cases it does. Our office will be happy to assist in contacting your insurance company and determining your coverage based on your individual policy. For more information, visit our insurance plan page and please do not hesitate to contact our office. We do offer different payment options for your convenience.
-
What if I don’t have insurance? For patients who do not have insurance, we offer a discounted fee, due at the time of service.
-
Do we accept insurance? We accept most major insurance companies, among them Medicare.
-
What type of payment do you accept? We accept cash, check, debit card, and credit card. We are happy to discuss payment plan options as well. It is our policy that payment is made at the time of service. Your insurance benefits will be determined before your second visit, and you will be informed of what, if any, payment is necessary on that date.
-
PreparationsWhen preparing for your initial physical or occupational therapy appointment, be sure to write down the important facts about the history of your problem. By writing things down, you are less likely to forget or miss important facts. Try to answer the following: When and how did your problem begin? What was your functional mobility status prior to your injury? How often do the symptoms recur? How is that problem changing? What makes things better or worse? Your therapist will likely ask you some questions about your injury or illness. Be sure to bring a list of your medications and any surgeries or procedure(s) you have had in the past.
-
What to WearBe prepared to move around a lot during your first therapy session. With that in mind, choose clothing that is easy to move around in. If you have shoulder pain, wear a shirt that allows access to your shoulder and arm. Shorts should be worn if you have hip pain, knee pain, or ankle pain.
-
Initial ExaminationNew patients are asked to arrive 15 minutes early for their first appointment to fill out the necessary paperwork in our patient waiting area. After the therapist talks to you about your condition, they will then perform an examination. Your PT/OT will focus on measuring impairments that may be causing your problem or that may be affected by your injury. Common measurements taken during a physical therapy examination include: Palpation · Range of motion (ROM) measurements Tests of strength Functional mobility Balance Neurological screening tests During the examination, your therapist should give you clear instructions about what to expect and what to do. Once the exam is complete, you can get started on your PT-OT treatment plan.
-
Setting up a Treatment PlanAfter your examination, your PT-OT will have a pretty clear idea of a treatment plan to start working on decreasing your pain and improving your mobility. The therapist will discuss with you the goals of treatment and the expected course of your rehab. The therapist will also make recommendations about how frequently to return for treatments. Your specific program will depend on variable factors including your pain level or current level of mobility. When embarking on a treatment plan, ask the PT-OT what improvements you can expect to achieve over a certain period of time. Be optimistic but have realistic goals. Research suggests that the best results are achieved with a multidisciplinary team consisting of a doctor, PT, OT and other specialists (such as a dietitian or psychotherapist when needed). The irregular or occasional use of PT-OT tends to be less successful.
